Research area B: Mitochondria in stress response and disease

Work in the research area B focuses on the multiple ways mitochondria communicate with their cellular environment under stress or in pathological conditions. Different mitochondria-derived signalling molecules and cascades will be analysed including ROS signalling, Ca2+ signalling, nutrient sensing, inflammatory responses as well as apoptotic and necrotic cell death pathways involving TNF1 and Toll-like receptors.

Understanding how metabolic function and morphological alterations of mitochondria contribute to cell signalling, and how these pathways in turn affect mitochondrial dynamics and cell survival under pathological conditions will provide new insight into the cell-type specificity of mitochondrial diseases.
